This deal on the iPad 4 16GB ties the best we've seen for a new condition model, last seen two weeks ago. You'd throw away $50 more buying from the Apple Store for $499.

This is the low price point for the iPad 4 16GB WiFi these days. It probably won't push anyone over the buying brink, but if you were already planning on grabbing the most popular tablet out, you might as well save thirty bucks, right? Apple Store is (of course) $499. Tax in CA only.

Cheapest we've seen the new condition iPad 4 16GB, and a nice $30 off the Apple Store price. Granted, it's not a massive price drop - it's been very close to this price in the past couple months. But you can always pick up another charge cable or two, or a cover, or any number of little accessories with the money you save.

If you need more space than the standard 16GB and want to be able to use the iPad on the go without looking for WiFi, CowBoom has preowned iPad 3 Retinas with Verizon 4G capability for the lowest price we've ever seen by $60. The ones they're selling now are "condition 4 - significant scratches or scuffs" - but if you're envisioning a utilitarian role for the tablet, that shouldn't get in the way of getting things done.

This is the lowest price we've seen on a NEW condition iPad 3 64GB, and the seller is throwing in free one-day shipping so you get near-instant tablet gratification. Next best price is $8 more, but you won't get one-day shipping with that. If you bought from the Apple Store back in the day, you'd pay over $150 more. Don't.

Huge $44 price drop on the pre-owned iPad 3 64GB with Retina display. Product condition according to CowBoom at present is a 5 - 'some scratches and/or signs of use' - so if that's acceptable, this is a bargain compared to paying over $200 more at the Apple Store.

In this case, it doesn't look like it comes with anything other than a guarantee that the product works when you get it in the mail. But you also have the option of buying a Product Protection plan (warranty). One year is $20 and two years is $38 - so if you got one of these, you'd still be saving a good bit off the cheapest you'd find anywhere else.

Remember these ARE pre-owned, but you can read about the condition of the item before you buy it by clicking 'Choose Best Available' on CowBoom's site.

Not a huge discount by any stretch on the 64GB iPad mini, but it's just about the only one out there. No Retina screen, but much more ideal for on-the-go use than the normal iPad size, and with storage maxed out, you won't need to rely on the Cloud for additional backup. Apple Store price is $529.

Like a regular iPad, but just small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, making it more ideal for someone on the go. One day only deal from Newegg on the iPad 2, decked out with 64GB of storage, 3G for AT&T. If you don't care for a new unit, Apple outlet sells a similar spec refurbished unit for $679.

        reply

         (comments will be moderated)

Since its 2010 debut, the iPad has in many ways shaped the entire tablet market around itself. Currently on its fourth generation, the standard line of iPads features a IPS panel Retina display with a mind-boggling 2048x1536 pixel resolution - more visual information than you'll see on your 1080p HDTV. The new A6X processor chip is twice as fast as the previous chip, leading to an even more seamless tactile and visual experience.

This generation also marks the debut of Apple's new Lightning connector - the successor to the now-ubiquitous 30-pin connector found on all previous iPads, iPods, and other iDevices. While it feels a little like a hustle to get you to cough up an extra $30 for an adapter for backwards compatibility with speaker docks, old car chargers, and more, the new connector IS smaller and makes more sense from a design standpoint, so wider adoption is on the way from third-party manufacturers scrambling to support the newest from Apple.

Third-party manufacturers scramble to make products for iPad owners for one simple reason: people on the whole love the iPad. iPads of all generations are by far the most popular choice for people looking for a tablet that just WORKS. You have hundreds of thousands of apps at your fingertips in the App Store. The iTunes Store makes finding new music a breeze. In terms of usage, if you get a Bluetooth keyboard or keyboard dock to go with an iPad, you could conceivably replace a laptop computer with one - and they're far sleeker and more portable than the alternative.

In short, the iPad IS the standard to beat, the scale by which all other tablets are inevitably measured, even if they're not trying to compete in the same arena.

Prices on a new 4th gen iPad direct from the Apple Store range from $499 for the 16GB model with WiFi to a whopping $829 for the 64GB model with WiFi + Cellular connectivity. As with many popular Apple products, price drops are fairly predictable. A couple months after their debut, we'll see a modest $25 drop, and perhaps another $25 drop a few months after that. Once refurbished models start hitting the market, discounts become more dramatic. On previous generation models, those discounts can be well over $100, even for new condition iPads.

But if you'd rather get a new tablet with all the iPad bells and whistles without paying half a grand, there's a new alternative.

The iPad mini plays ball on the same court as its bigger sibling starting at a significantly cheaper $329 list price. In its first generation, it doesn't have a Retina display, but it'll still look better than an iPad 1 or iPad 2 with the same number of pixels on a smaller screen. (Frankly, if you're using a tablet from a typical foot and a half or greater distance, you won't be able to tell the screen's not Retina.)

Perhaps the biggest argument for the mini over the regular-sized iPad other than lower price is just that - its smaller size. You can hold the mini in one hand and tap the screen with the other easily. It's incredibly light, thinner than the regular iPad, and can do essentially everything the 4th generation iPad can. In our view, it's actually a more ideal size for a tablet because of the versatility the smaller footprint provides. It's easy to read books on it instead of on a far less feature-rich eReader. You could conceivably walk somewhere and consult information on it in one hand - although we'd still recommend looking both ways before crossing the street.

So if you're looking to get a tablet from Apple, you DO have more choices now than just the resolution of your screen and the speed of your processor. Even as some scoff at the never-ending cycle of better specs, every generation and model iPad has received rave reviews from owners and holds its muster against its generation's Android competitors. (And WebOS as well, for that matter. Remember the HP Touchpad?)

Keep in mind you can get great deals on previous generations for hundreds less than you'll pay for a new model. And in the majority of cases, the previous models will probably suffice and be capable of everything you'd want to do with a tablet.
